About this work
A standing nude woman at left faces a group of loosely sketched figures: a bent kneeling woman with lowered head, a curled seated figure resting her head on one arm, a woman crouching over her own reflection, and a small seated figure at the bottom edge. At lower left a tall vase holds dried cotton-boll stems, their pods rendered as small tufted balls.
Open contour lines predominate, with cross-hatching reserved for hair, shadowed torsos and the dark vase; the loose, searching quality of the strokes and the repeated poses of the same models suggest a working study sheet rather than a finished scene, quiet and studious in mood.
